Designating Petitions

(petition season takes place in March each year)

WHAT ARE PETITIONS?
In New York, most candidates get on the primary ballot by filing a "petition" containing a specified number of signatures from registered Democrats in their election district (5% of the registered Democrats in North Castle).

WHO CAN SIGN A PETITION?
Any registered Democrat in the candidate's election district. Residents may only sign one petition for each elected position (for example, if two Democrats are planning on running in the primary election for Town Supervisor, you may only sign one of the petitions).

SHOULD I BE CONCERNED ABOUT SIGNING A PETITION?
Absolutely not! All your signature means is that you believe the candidate listed on the petition should appear on the primary ballot in the next election.  You are not pledging to vote or otherwise support said candidate. Signing a petition is an important way to take part in the electoral process, and it only takes a minute of your time!

The NCDC helps local, state & national candidates by carrying their petitions, and obtaining signatures from registered Democrats in our town. Members of the committee may knock on your door to obtain signatures, or may reach out via phone or email to schedule a convenient time for you to sign.
